When it comes to Hong Kong, you may not know about the Ocean park, you may not know about the Women Market, you my not know about the Peak. But you must know about our Victoria Harbor.
It is globally known that Hong Kong had been a crown colony of the United Kingdom before the handover on the 1st of July in 1997. Due to treaties after wars, the United Kingdom gained control over some coastal area of China. And it is said that the British had picked up Hong Kong mainly because of this once deep and wide harbor, subsequently named as Victoria, in the hope to penetrate their marine trading market into China.
Hong Kong consists of three main parts: the New Territories at the North, Kowloon Peninsula at the middle embracing the Victoria Harbor with the Hong Kong Island at the South. In the old days, before the appearance of the undersea tunnels and MTR, Star Ferry was the only way to travel through the Harbor from Hong Kong Island to Kowloon, or vice versa.
Established in1888, the passenger ferry service provided by The “Star” Ferry Company Limited has become a trademark, even a famous tourism spot now. The National Geographical of Traveler recommends a crossing of Victoria Harbor as one of the “fifty places of a lifetime.
The ”Star” Ferry operates four routes in total, connecting Kowloon and Hong Kong Island with four piers. The most popular is the red one in the following route map, bringing you from Tsim Sha Tsui Pier to Central Pier in about 5 minutes
Star Ferry Company now organizes harbor tour to show you the old times when this ferry was still the only connection between Hong Kong Island and Kowloon Peninsula. Have a ride on ”Shining Star” and catch the most memorable scene you can have in Hong Kong.
<PTU> stands for Police Tactical Unit, which is specially established for dealing with severe crimes and violence in Hong Kong. The well-known Hong Kong film director, Johnny To, depicts you the night street life in Hong Kong with a dark brush in the film <PTU>.
A Sergeant of Organized Crime and Triad Bureau has lost his revolver after being assaulted by a group of triad members. A PTU team discovered the injured Sergeant, who pleaded the PTU not to report his gun-missing. Throughout the night, the Sergeant searches for his revolver with the help from the PTU team, which is going to lead them to a complex of different crimes, criminals, hostility among criminals themselves and even rivalry within the Police Force.
PTU is often referred to as ‘the Blue Berets’ by locals in reference to the blue (now black) berets of their uniforms. The Regional PTU division is a big company providing an always ready reserve to tackle with threats to public security or natural disasters, like it helps crowd control in big events or demonstrations. On daily basis, the PTU is deployed into streams and teams to patrol and to supplement district resources against crimes in identified crime black spots.
The following video (in Cantonese with Chinese sub-title) introducing another important front-line and tough division of the Police Force – Emergency Unit (EU).
Normally, the Hong Kong International Airport should be the very first place you visit when you come to Hong Kong.
Located at Chek Lap Kok (thus colloquially also known as Chek Lap Kok Airport) in Lantau Island, Hong Kong International Airport comes into service in 1998 to replace the Kai Tak Airport. Though with a short history of just about ten years, it has already won seven Skytrax World Airport Awards and a lot of other awards.
Years ago, the now obsolete Kai Tak Airport has also once been one of the busiest airport in the world. Located in the Kowloon City in Hong Kong, it was too close to the residential area for an airport and the noise pollution was a big problem. You can see at the following genuine picture below how the people living in Kowloon City were ”interacted” with the flights.
Now the airport has moved to the remote Chek Lap Kok, Lantau Island, and without the problem of noise control, the airport can operate on a round-the-clock basis with its multiple runway.
Though built at a remote area, HKIA is connect to the city by the Airport Express railway and the MTR network. You can go to whichever sightseeing in Hong Kong very conveniently.
In fact, the local television station TVB has produced a TV series about the operation and service of an airport, and the service on filghts in 2003, using HKIA as one of the major shooting backgrounds. Starring Francis Ng, Flora Chan, Joe Ma and some other Hong Kong artistes, this TV drama ”Triumph in the Skies” was very popular at that time.
This is the opening theme song of the series, performed by a dominant singer in Hong Kong - Eason Chan.
